Google Wallet to Enable Visa, Mastercard Payments in China

Google Wallet is developing a new QR code payment feature aimed at simplifying transactions for travelers in Asia. The upcoming functionality will allow users to make payments at Alipay+ supported merchants using Visa or Mastercard cards stored within Google Wallet.

How the Traveler QR Feature Works

The yet-to-be-announced feature surfaced through a recent teardown of the Google Wallet Android app. Users will be able to scan a QR code at participating Alipay+ merchants and complete their payment securely through the Alipay+ network. The app will recognize supported QR codes and notify users if their saved card qualifies, prompting them to add a Visa or Mastercard if needed.

Expanding Access to Alipay+ Network via Google Wallet

Alipay+ is a vast digital payment platform serving over 1.8 billion users across more than 100 markets with 40 partner wallets worldwide. This includes regional leaders like PayPay in Japan, Bluecode in Europe, and KBank in Thailand, as well as prominent services such as GCash, Kakao Pay, Touch ‘n Go, and TrueMoney in Asia. By integrating with Alipay+, Google Wallet users will potentially gain seamless payment options at a wide array of merchants throughout Asia.

Early testing hints that Singapore may be among the first markets to receive this functionality, supported by a sandbox domain hosted by DBS Bank. The integration also appears tailored to complement existing contactless payment methods in Japan, which already uses NFC and FeliCa technology.

Significance for Pakistani Travelers

For Pakistani nationals traveling across Asia, this development could streamline spending in popular destinations such as China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and the Philippines. Eliminating the need for carrying cash or handling currency conversions will enhance convenience and security. However, since Pakistani mobile wallets like JazzCash and Easypaisa are not yet part of the Alipay+ ecosystem, travelers will still need a validated Visa or Mastercard linked to Google Wallet to use the new payment method abroad.

Google has not disclosed an official release date for the Traveler QR feature, but the expansion of Alipay+ cross-border services past 100 markets as of October 2025 signals growing momentum for international digital payments in the region.

Technology analyst Abdul Wasay notes, “This integration represents a significant move towards seamless global payments, especially for tourists in Asia.”
