Meta Allows Independent Ads on Threads Without Instagram
Meta has announced a significant policy change, allowing advertisers to run ad campaigns on its Threads platform without the previous requirement of matching usernames with Instagram profiles. This move marks a clear step in Meta’s strategy to establish Threads as a distinct social media entity separate from Instagram.
Until now, advertisers needed to maintain identical usernames across both Threads and Instagram to launch advertising campaigns. This restriction meant that businesses had to consider Threads and Instagram as a unified platform ecosystem, despite differing user behavior on each service. However, recognizing the unique audience and engagement characteristics of Threads, Meta is removing these constraints starting September 2026.
From September 2026 onward, businesses can independently advertise on Threads without having an Instagram profile, making Threads a truly standalone option for marketing campaigns. This change eliminates a substantial barrier for companies aiming to target specifically Threads users, who now number over 500 million. Meta emphasized that the username matching between Threads and Instagram accounts will no longer be mandatory, but optional.
For advertisers with existing Threads profiles, the transition will be seamless, as access permissions from Instagram profiles will apply automatically. New Threads profiles will need to be added manually in the Meta Business Suite under the new business portfolio framework. Meta outlined the process for adding Threads accounts to business portfolios through the Meta Business Suite interface.
The decision to separate Threads advertising from Instagram reflects Meta’s adaptation to its platforms’ evolving user dynamics. Earlier integration efforts, such as linking Instagram engagement metrics to Threads recommendations, have been discontinued because they failed to accurately predict user interests on Threads.
Meta is gradually rolling out this update, and not all advertisers have immediate access to these independent advertising capabilities. The phased approach allows Meta to monitor adoption and performance before full deployment. Eventually, all businesses will be able to leverage independent advertising features on Threads.
This development signals Meta’s commitment to growing Threads into a robust social media platform with tailored advertising products, independent of Instagram’s framework.
