IHC removes PTA chairman over illegal appointment
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has invalidated the appointment of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, declaring the process legally flawed.
The judgment, authored by Justice Babar Sattar in a 99-page decision, accepted the petition challenging the chairman’s position.
The court ruled that the appointment did not comply with the law and therefore could not be sustained.
The IHC ordered the immediate removal of the chairman from office. In the interim, the court directed that a senior PTA member should assume charge as acting chairman until a fresh, lawful appointment is made.

Legal experts note that the ruling underlines the judiciary’s insistence on merit and transparency in filling critical regulatory roles.
The PTA is responsible for overseeing Pakistan’s telecom policies, spectrum allocation, and internet regulations. Any irregularity in its leadership, they argue, undermines both institutional credibility and sector stability.
The decision comes at a time when the telecom industry is facing rising demands for improved digital infrastructure and better consumer protection.
