JI Demands End to Petroleum Levy Before PM Talks
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has linked its willingness to engage with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the abolition of Pakistan’s petroleum levy, intensifying pressure on the government amid rising fuel costs. JI’s leadership insists that any meeting with the prime minister must come with a clear commitment to remove the levy that significantly impacts fuel prices.
JI’s Stance on the Petroleum Levy
JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman stated that without a firm promise from the government to scrap the petroleum levy, their dialogue with the prime minister would be unproductive. The party has previously submitted multiple proposals aimed at eliminating the additional charge embedded in petrol and diesel prices, underscoring their long-standing opposition to the levy. Furthermore, a fresh timeline for protests in Islamabad may be announced post-October 12 if the government fails to offer meaningful fuel-price relief.
Understanding the Petroleum Levy’s Impact
The petroleum levy is a domestic government-imposed fee that forms part of the retail price motorists pay for fuel. Unlike international crude prices, fluctuations in global markets do not always reflect at local pumps because of fixed levies. According to fiscal data from the Finance Ministry, Pakistan collected approximately Rs1.57 trillion via the petroleum levy in fiscal year 2025-26, with similar amounts budgeted for the current year. This levy contributes significantly to government revenue but also inflates fuel costs, thereby impacting inflation and the cost of living.
Why This Matters to Pakistani Motorists
For everyday consumers and motorists, the petroleum levy represents a notable component of fuel prices, making the possibility of its removal a vital issue. JI’s demands spotlight the broader debate on balancing government revenue needs and public relief amid economic challenges. However, it is important to note that despite JI’s political pressure, no official decision has been made yet to abolish or reduce the levy, leaving motorists awaiting clear government action or announcements.
As negotiations continue, Pakistani consumers should remain attentive to official updates regarding fuel pricing policies, as changes to the petroleum levy would have a significant effect on pump prices and inflationary pressures in the country.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman emphasized, “Our party will not meet the prime minister without a clear assurance on the petroleum levy’s abolition.” This underscores the political significance of the levy in current economic discourse.
