Karachi water scheme: Wapda awards consultancy contract
Islamabad: With a view to its commitment to constructing Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) in the shortest possible time, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Thursday awarded the consultancy services contract worth Rs.1.14 billion.
The JVs comprise an Austrian and two Pakistani firms. The joint consultancy services agreement consists of design review, detailed engineering design, allied electro-mechanical works, power, coordination for the distribution system, preparation of bidding documents, and the PC-I.
The Wapda and JVs signed a consultancy services contract between WAPDA and the JV for K-IV Project that was held here. The agreement was signed by K-IV Project Management and the representative of the JV.
Dilating upon the significance of the project, the State Minister for information and Broadcasting said that K-IV is a flagship project of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Package for Karachi.
The project will go a long way in meeting the water requirements of the cosmopolitan of Karachi. Appreciating WAPDA for streamlining the project, the Minister said that he is confident that WAPDA will be able to complete this project of paramount importance in accordance with the timelines.
Speaking on the occasion, WAPDA Chairman said that WAPDA is implementing K-IV as a priority project with a view to fulfilling the responsibility entrusted upon it by the Prime Minister and the Federal Government.
WAPDA has devised a well-thought-out plan to complete the K-IV Project on time, for which support and cooperation of all the stakeholders including the Government of Sindh is all the more important, he added. The chairman further said that WAPDA stands committed to completing the K-IV by October 2023.
Addressing the ceremony, the Austrian Ambassador said that he is happy that one of the Austrian firms is also going to be associated with K-IV, which is an important project for supplying water to Karachiites.
It is worth mentioning here that K-IV Project envisages supplying 650 million gallons of drinking water per day to Karachi. Earlier, the project was being constructed by the Sindh Government, however, the Federal Government, under an arrangement with the Provincial Government has taken up implementation of the project as part of the Prime Minister’s Package for Karachi and directed WAPDA to take over the responsibility of constructing the project.
Project Director K. Amir Mughal said that 15 companies expressed interest. WAPDA has given project design consultancy to ILF Austria and two Pakistani companies. The cost of project design consultancy is Rs 1.14 billion.
Minister of State for Information Farrukh Habib said that the People of Karachi will get rid of the tanker mafia. He said that the Prime Minister launched plans for the rehabilitation of Karachi.
The Prime Minister is making every effort to provide relief to the people of Karachi, he said adding that PM’s focus is on future generations instead of the next general election.

Construction of dams has started under the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said adding that the government’s focus is on water resources and affordable electricity generation.
