KP Forms New Police Unit for Counter-Terror Ops

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved the creation of a specialised police unit designed to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts across the province.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting at the Secretariat of Chief Minister, chaired by Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi.

Officials briefed the meeting on the plan to establish the special branch as an independent and professional cadre.

The chief minister endorsed proposals for new buildings, upgraded facilities for the new force and expanded operations throughout the province.

According to the provincial government, more than Rs5.26 billion has been allocated for the initiative.

The funding will support improvements in infrastructure, transport, technical gear and advanced surveillance tools.

During the briefing, the chief minister was told the special branch had defused two suicide jackets, 32 IEDs, 70 rocket shells and 228 grenades this year.

Officials said these measures highlighted the evolving security challenges confronting the province.

CM noted that the unit would operate on modern lines to meet counter-terrorism needs and emphasised that the police remained central to the security framework.

He added that the government would continue providing all necessary resources to strengthen the branch’s operational readiness.
