Lahore Installs QR Panic Buttons in 82,000+ Public Vehicles
Lahore has taken a significant step toward enhancing public transport safety by equipping over 82,000 vehicles, including rickshaws and ride-hailing cabs, with QR code-based panic buttons. This initiative aims to provide immediate assistance to commuters, especially women, in cases of harassment or emergencies.
QR Panic Button Implementation and Usage
The City Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore, Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, confirmed that installation of QR panic buttons has been mandated as part of efforts to integrate public transport services within a legal framework and improve passenger security. So far, more than 22,000 passengers have utilized these QR codes to alert authorities.
The panic buttons have been strategically attached at 45 designated points throughout the city. Traffic teams, including 12 special squads focusing specifically on rickshaws, have been deployed to cover all sectors efficiently. Additionally, four new licensing centers were established after requests from rickshaw unions to streamline compliance.
Enhancing Public Transport Through Technology
According to the CTO, this move is part of a broader strategy to introduce smart traffic management and advanced security features within the city’s public transport network. Online cab services are now required to implement updated tracking and safety measures to allow better monitoring of both drivers and passengers.
Authorities have pledged to take strict action against online cab operators failing to comply with these new security standards, emphasizing the importance of modern technology in enabling safe and reliable travel.
Importance for Pakistan’s Urban Commuters
With urban centers like Lahore witnessing rapid growth, public transportation safety remains a critical concern for residents, especially women who often face harassment during commutes. The introduction of QR panic buttons represents a practical and tech-driven solution that can help reduce crime and improve commuter confidence.
As Pakistan continues to embrace digitization in various sectors, such measures exemplify how technology can directly impact citizens’ daily lives by enhancing security and efficiency in public services.
“The use of modern technology is providing citizens with safe, reliable and quality travel facilities,” CTO Shirazi commented, highlighting the government’s commitment to ongoing improvements.
