LESCO Charges Full AMI Meter Cost to Electricity Thieves

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has updated its policy regarding individuals caught stealing electricity. The utility will now charge the full price of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meter to consumers found tampering with or manipulating their meters.

New Meter Charges for Tampering

Previously, consumers detected stealing power were billed for a traditional static meter at Rs5,500. However, under the new directives, LESCO has substantially increased this amount by charging Rs14,400, the cost of an AMI smart single-phase meter. Demand notices reflecting this updated rate have already started being issued.

Replacing Static Meters with Smart AMI Meters

By transitioning from static meters to more advanced AMI smart meters in cases of meter tampering, LESCO aims to enhance monitoring and reduce theft. The AMI meters provide more accurate readings and better control over electricity distribution, which can help curb misuse effectively.

Implications for Pakistani Consumers

This shift in policy is significant for consumers across Pakistan, particularly those tempted to bypass electricity payments. The higher cost for stolen electricity signals a tougher stance on energy theft, an issue that has long plagued the country’s power sector. Increasing theft penalties encourages fair billing practices and supports the utilities in managing losses that ultimately affect power supply reliability and tariffs for honest users.

A LESCO spokesperson summed up the change: “The new charges reflect the true cost of monitoring and preventing theft using advanced technology.”
