Lionel Messi Hints at 2026 World Cup Participation
Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi has hinted he could play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, depending entirely on his physical condition and fitness next year.
The 37-year-old, who will celebrate his 39th birthday in June 2026, remains determined to defend the World Cup title for Argentina with full commitment and focus.
If he decides to participate, it would become his sixth appearance at World Cup, adding another remarkable milestone to his extraordinary international career.
Speaking to NBC News, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner confirmed that retirement is not yet on his mind and he intends to continue playing professionally.
Messi explained that he will carefully evaluate his fitness level during the start of Inter Miami’s preseason before making any formal commitment to the national team.
“Playing in a World Cup is an extraordinary experience, and I would absolutely love the opportunity,” Messi said, emphasizing he will assess his ability to contribute effectively.
His recent contract extension with Major League Soccer side Inter Miami until 2028 highlights Messi’s continued dedication and passion for football despite his long, illustrious career.

Since joining MLS in 2023, he has significantly boosted the league’s popularity, attracting large crowds and increasing international attention for American professional football events.
Defending Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory remains a major motivation for Messi, who described the chance to play internationally again as both spectacular and deeply meaningful.
“We just won the last World Cup, and having the opportunity to defend it is extraordinary while representing my country continues to be a special privilege,” Messi added.
Messi started his professional journey with Barcelona in 2004 at just 17 years old, beginning a career that would redefine modern football history.
Over the past two decades, he has become one of the sport’s most decorated players, winning multiple UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles before joining Inter Miami.
Although international glory initially eluded him, Messi finally achieved success with Argentina by winning the Copa America in 2021, a milestone that defined his international career.
He then led Argentina to a dramatic 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, defeating France 4-2 on penalties in one of the tournament’s most memorable finals ever.
“That World Cup win was the dream of my life, completing the one achievement missing after accomplishing almost everything possible at club level,” Messi reflected proudly.
To date, Messi has represented Argentina in 195 matches, scoring a record 114 goals while consistently maintaining his position as one of football’s greatest icons.
