Mari Petroleum supplies 40mmcfd gas to national grid

Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has supplied 40 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) to the national grid on a fast track basis to address woes of electricity load shedding.

Sources told Newztodays.com that Mari Petroleum has been supplying 110 mmcfd gas to CPGCL/GENCO-II.

However, this power plant operates on and off due to merit orders. Currently, this plant was shut down due to a merit order issue and Mari Petroleum was not supplying gas to it.

So, Mari Petroleum decided to supply 40 mmcfd gas on a fast track basis to the national grid in an order to address the situation it emerged following the dry docking of the Engro LNG terminal.

Petroleum Division had requested to supply gas to the national grid.

While positively responding to the Petroleum Division’s request for enhancing gas production to mitigate gas shortages due to outage of LNG terminal, Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has played its due role by supplying around 40 MMSCFD gas to the national grid from Mari field on fast track basis.

MPCL made this possible by utilizing the undrawn gas volumes by CPGCL/GENCO-II through optimizing its gas production capacity, sources said.

The country had faced power outages as the 600 mmcfd LNG went out of the system due to dry docking of the Engro LNG terminal.

The country had faced a power crisis as the power plants had only 400 mmcfd gas against their demand of 1000 mmcfd gas. Following shut down of the Engro Terminal, the power shortfall reached an alarming level of 10,000 Megawatt (MW).

The government authorities had strongly criticized the Engro for maneuvering the situation. It was to serve a notice one year back. However, it served a notice in March this year, a month when it was due to move its FSRU for dry docking.
