Maria Corina Machado Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her persistent struggle to promote democracy and human rights.

Announcing the award in Oslo, Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes praised Machado for her courage and commitment to peaceful democratic reform in Venezuela.

He said that Machado had dedicated years to advancing the political rights of Venezuelans and working for a transition from authoritarian rule to democracy.

Frydnes described the opposition leader as one of Latin Americas most inspiring voices, calling her leadership a symbol of civilian courage and democratic resilience.

The committee noted that Machado played a crucial role in uniting a once divided opposition around a shared demand for free and fair elections.

Her efforts, according to Frydnes, represent the true essence of democracy by defending public participation even when political opinions differ sharply among citizens.

He added that defending democracy has become vital at a time when political freedoms face increasing pressure across the world, including in Latin America.

The Nobel Committee concluded that the example of Machado underscores the power of nonviolent resistance and civic unity in restoring democratic governance in Venezuela.
