Meta Launches New Tool to Protect Facebook Reels

Meta has introduced a mobile content protection tool that helps Facebook creators safeguard their original reels from unauthorized reposts online.

The feature alerts creators when their reel appears on Facebook or Instagram through uploads made without permission from the owner.

Creators can block visibility for reposted reels, monitor their performance, or add attribution links directing viewers back to original profiles.

They may also release their claim if they prefer allowing the reposted reel to remain public across both social platforms.

Meta says the tool supports its wider strategy promoting originality, following significant actions against impersonation, fake engagement, and spam accounts.

Although Instagram uploads qualify, the system only tracks reels posted directly on Facebook or shared using its cross-posting feature today.

The tool is rolling out to creators who meet monetization requirements and satisfy the integrity guidelines of Meta supporting original content policies.

Eligible users receive notifications through their Feed, profile or Professional Dashboard and can confirm access under the Content Protection section.

Matching technology evaluates reels, displays similarity levels, and shows details like views, follower numbers and monetization status for reposting accounts.

Creators can build allow lists for trusted accounts, preventing unnecessary flags and reducing the chances of mistakenly reported matching reels.

Blocking a reel limits its reach without penalizing the reposting account, protecting fairness and discouraging misuse of the protection system.

Creators can dispute incorrect claims or report missed matches, and Meta plans to expand the mobile feature to desktop soon.
