Murad Ali Shah Launches Sindhi Muslim Food Walk in Karachi
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah officially opened the Sindhi Muslim Food Walk in Chanesar Town, Karachi, a project valued at Rs250 million aimed at revitalizing the local commercial and recreational scene. Speaking at the inauguration on November 1, 2026, Mr. Shah highlighted this initiative as a model for urban improvement through effective local government management and resource utilization.
Details of the Sindhi Muslim Food Walk Project
The food walk, developed by Chanesar Town Municipal Corporation, commenced earlier this year on February 1 and was completed by October. Key features of the project include the overhaul of sewerage systems, underground electrical wiring, removal of overhead cables, newly laid roads and footpaths, modern street and decorative lighting, landscaping efforts, upgrade of parking facilities, and improved traffic signage. These enhancements are designed to create a more organized and family-friendly environment for visitors and businesses alike.
Importance for Karachi and Local Governance
Chief Minister Shah emphasized the significance of the food walk in promoting Karachi’s potential for food and cultural tourism, fostering economic growth and creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs. He commended the Chanesar Town administration for funding and completing the project through its own financial resources, setting a precedent for other towns to maximize their revenue generation for developmental work.
He also stressed that ongoing maintenance—covering cleanliness, waste management, streetlight functionality, plantation, and traffic control—is crucial to sustain such urban projects. The Sindh government’s efforts to empower local bodies include doubling grants over recent years and devolving the Urban Immovable Property Tax to improve fiscal strength. Furthermore, the CLICK programme aids municipal improvements through property surveys to boost revenue collection capacities.
Broader Development Initiatives and Security Measures
In addition to the food walk, Murad Ali Shah outlined the provincial government’s extensive urban development plans across Karachi, including upgrades on 165 roads and major infrastructure projects such as the Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway and the K-IV water supply scheme. Public spaces including parks and recreational facilities are also receiving focus to make the city more livable and attractive.
The chief minister reiterated the commitment to enhanced security, specifically mentioning the ban on public display of weapons to ensure a safe environment at the food walk and across Karachi. He instructed the police to maintain robust security measures at the venue, pledging regular personal monitoring. Addressing the business community, he invited collaboration on ventures that promise profitable outcomes while encouraging dialogue to address administrative hurdles faced by public-sector entities.
Highlighting local governance successes, Mr. Shah pointed out that Chanesar Town has outpaced others in revenue collection and development efforts. “The more revenue a town generates, the more development projects it will attract,” he explained during his address, underscoring the link between fiscal discipline and urban progress.
