‘Obsession’ Scores 96% on Rotten Tomatoes in 2026

The supernatural horror film Obsession has emerged as 2026’s highest-rated horror movie, earning an impressive 96% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on 57 reviews, the film’s strong reception precedes its theatrical release on May 15.

Directed and written by Curry Barker in his feature directorial debut, Obsession is a Focus Features production that has garnered significant attention in the horror community. Barker also edited the film, which was acquired in a distribution deal worth over $15 million after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.

The film centers around Bear, a music store employee played by Michael Johnston, who buys a supernatural toy called the One Wish Willow. Using it, he wishes for his childhood friend Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him. What begins as a seemingly innocent wish turns into a nightmarish scenario as Nikki’s love becomes dangerously obsessive. Her behavior grows increasingly erratic and clingy, accompanied by disturbing hallucinations only she experiences.

Critics have praised Barker’s work for elevating a familiar premise into a chilling and unsettling horror narrative. Bloody Disgusting highlighted the film’s effective descent into terror, while The Guardian commended Barker’s ability to skillfully navigate his first theatrical feature. RogerEbert.com observed the film’s escalating darkness and tension, emphasizing its critique of extreme emotional dependence.

The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “Taking an icky conceit and twisting it to deviously crowd-pleasing ends, Obsession is dauntingly disturbing while also skillfully amusing and thrilling.” IndieWire awarded the film a B+ grade, likening it to Barbarian for its blend of sadistic violence, dark humor, and social commentary.

Barker’s concept drew early interest after impressing producer James Harris of Tea Shop Productions with his 2023 YouTube horror short The Chair. Instead of expanding that short, Barker pitched the original script for Obsession. The film’s success also led to Barker signing with the William Morris Endeavor talent agency.

Obsession premiered in the Midnight Madness section at TIFF and appeared at Fantastic Fest, winning the Sitges People’s Choice Award. Focus Features secured worldwide distribution rights (excluding France, New Zealand, and Russia), with Universal Pictures International managing international release outside the U.S. Jason Blum, known for his work in horror, joined as executive producer under Blumhouse Productions.

The cast also includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter in supporting roles. Composed by Rock Burwell, the film’s score complements its tense atmosphere. The official trailer has already amassed over 15 million views, signaling significant anticipation ahead of release.

Box Office Pro projects that Obsession could earn between $7 million and $10 million during its opening weekend in North America. As Focus Features positions the film as a theatrical-first release, streaming or digital distribution plans remain unannounced for now.
