Overseas Pakistani Declared Dead Seeks Justice

An overseas Pakistani who was recorded as dead in NADRA records by his family has returned to Pakistan and approached the Sindh High Court.

Imran Malik filed a petition saying his family used a fake death certificate that declared him deceased in April 2024.

During the hearing, Justice Abdul Mobeen Lakho asked how the petitioner had managed to return if he had been officially recorded as dead.

Malik’s lawyer told the court that the petitioner’s passport had not been cancelled, which allowed him to travel back, but he is now unable to return abroad.

The lawyer said Malik, who had been living overseas, returned to Pakistan in October after four years and discovered his identity card had been blocked.

When Malik tried to open a bank account he learned from NADRA that he had been recorded as deceased in April 2024.

A criminal FIR has been registered against the family members allegedly involved in the fraud, the lawyer told the court.

The lawyer added that Malik’s siblings had pressured their mother and attempted to deprive him of his inheritance.

Counsel asked the court to direct NADRA to restore Malik’s Computerized National Identity Card.

Justice Yusuf Ali Saeed said the court will review the matter under NADRA’s authority and seek responses within four weeks.
