The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced a new facility allowing overseas Pakistanis to retain their Pakistani mobile phone SIM cards during extended stays abroad legally.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the regulator said the move would ensure continuity of mobile services and prevent SIM cards from being blocked overseas.

The authority said overseas Pakistanis can contact their respective mobile network operators to avail the facility while remaining outside the country for extended foreign stays.

It added the initiative aims to help expatriates maintain uninterrupted access to essential communication services while living or working abroad for long overseas periods globally.

The PTA said the measure reflects its commitment to empowering overseas Pakistanis and strengthening digital connectivity at the global level through improved regulatory support initiatives.

Last month, the authority reiterated that all mobile SIM cards must be registered in the name of the person using them under existing telecom regulations.

It warned that using SIMs registered to other individuals violates regulations and could lead to action by authorities under applicable national telecom laws and penalties.

The regulator clarified that the registered subscriber would be held fully accountable for any unlawful use of their SIM card under prevailing rules and policies.
