Police Officer Shot Himself During Pak vs SA Security Duty
A senior Islamabad police officer, SP Adeel Akbar, died on Thursday after allegedly shooting himself while performing security duties near the Serena checkpoint.
According to initial reports, the officer sustained critical injuries and was immediately shifted to PIMS Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death during treatment.
Evidence has been secured from the scene, and investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the tragic incident.
Sources said SP Adeel Akbar was assigned security responsibilities for the Pakistan and South Africa cricket teams near Serena Hotel when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses claimed he allegedly took a weapon from a subordinate before firing a shot at himself, prompting an immediate emergency response by fellow personnel present.
Police have taken the gunman of officer and other personnel present at the scene into custody, while his mobile phone has been seized for investigation.

Authorities are also working to trace the last phone call the officer received shortly before the incident to identify possible triggers or motives.
IG Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi visited PIMS Hospital to oversee post-mortem proceedings and received briefings from doctors regarding the officer’s condition.
Hospital officials confirmed that SP succumbed to chest injuries, and sources said he hailed from Kamonki and was a 46th Common officer who had previously served in Balochistan.
Many officers reportedly experience mental fatigue, stress, and limited family interaction due to long shifts, difficulty availing leave, and staff shortages in critical areas.
A 2024 assessment of Islamabad Police and Red Zone Commandos revealed stress and depression among several personnel.
Psychologists recommended counseling and monitoring to support officers under high-pressure conditions and maintain operational efficiency.
