PM, Ministers refuse to accept 10% increase in salary

Prime Minister, cabinet members, and state ministers have voluntarily refused to accept a 10 percent increase in salary on account of Adhoc relief due to the poor economic situation.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the cabinet division to withdraw a notification regarding the increase in his salary.

The Finance Division vide O.M. issued on July 8, 2021, had granted an Ad-hoc Relief Allowance-2021,@10% of Basic Pay to the civil employees of the Federal Government with effect from  July 1, 2021.

The government had approved an increase in salary of the civil employees on account of Adhoc relief that was also applicable on the federal and state ministers for years 2021-22.

Section 22A of the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Salaries, Allowances, and Privileges) Act, 1975 provides that an increase in the salaries, allowances, and privileges of Ministers shall automatically be increased by the Federal Government in proportion to the increase in the emoluments of the civil servants.

In terms of Section 22A of the Federal Ministers/Ministers of State Salaries, Allowances and Privileges Act, 1975 the Ad-hoc Relief Allowance, 2021 shall also be admissible to the Federal Ministers/Ministers of State with effect from July 1, 2021, as follows:

At present, the salary of the federal minister is Rs 200,000 per month whereas the state minister receives Rs 180,000 per month.

The cabinet division had proposed to increase 10 percent Adhoc relief for federal ministers and state ministers that amount to Rs 20,000 and Rs 15000 respectively.

The Cabinet Division proposed that the Federal Cabinet may approve the admissibility of Ad-hoc Relief Allowance,2021, at the rate of 10 percent, to the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State.

During the ensuing discussion and keeping in view the economic condition of the country, the Prime Minister voluntarily declined to accept Ad-hoc Relief Allowance admissible to him which the cabinet had notified.

The premier directed Cabinet Division to withdraw the same. Similarly, the Cabinet members also declined to accept the pay raise, which the cabinet had proposed.

The Cabinet considered the summary titled ‘Grant of Ad-hoc Relief Allowance-2021 to the Federal Ministers/Ministers of State’ dated 30th July 2021, cabinet division had submitted and did not approve the proposal.
