PTA Chief Restored After Court Halts Dismissal Order

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended its earlier ruling that removed Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman as Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman.

Justice Babar Sattar had previously declared the promotion of Hafeez illegal, stating it violated PTA Appointment Rules and the Telecom Act since the Member (Administration) post did not legally exist.

Rehman filed an intra-court appeal challenging the ruling, arguing his appointment in May 2023 and later elevation to Chairman were made under lawful procedures.

His legal team contended that the government followed all necessary steps, including cabinet approval, before notifying him as PTA Chairman, making his removal legally questionable.

The IHC division bench accepted his petition for hearing and suspended the verdict of Justice Sattar, reinstating Rehman until the court delivers its final judgment on merit.

Telecom industry experts say the temporary reinstatement stabilizes PTA leadership, ensuring continuity in spectrum auctions, licensing, and digital policy implementation amid ongoing challenges in the sector.
