Punjab Makes EV Chargers Mandatory at New Pumps
The Punjab government has made it compulsory for all newly established petrol pumps to include electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the directive on her official Facebook page, presenting it as part of the broader push of administration to strengthen EV infrastructure.
The decision aligns with national efforts to cut emissions and build a modern transport network.
The New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy of Pakistan, introduced in August 2025, targets new energy vehicles reaching 30 percent of new sales by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
The policy also outlines a long-term plan to create a net-zero transport fleet by 2060.
The policy is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, the Ministry of Industries and Production, and industry stakeholders.

Government representatives have repeatedly stressed the urgency of shifting to cleaner transport to tackle worsening air quality.
Earlier this year, Climate Change Ministry spokesperson Muhammad Saleem Shaikh noted that the transport sector is one of largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
He said that expanding the use of electric vehicles is essential for a healthier and more stable future.
Mohammad Asif Sahibzada said electric vehicles cut urban smog by producing no tailpipe emissions and support Pakistan’s climate commitments.
He said the transition will also ease the burden of respiratory and heart-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable communities.
