Punjab to Hold Local Polls in December 2025
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that local body elections across Punjab will be held in December 2025 under the Local Government Act 2022.
The decision followed extensive hearings on the long-delayed electoral process in Punjab, marking an important step toward restoring local-level democratic governance.
A five-member bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja delivered the verdict after multiple proceedings on the matter of local elections.
The commission stated that the delimitation of constituencies would be completed within two months, allowing timely elections across Punjab later this year.
According to the Election Commission, the polls will be conducted in full compliance with the Local Government Act 2022 and all relevant legal requirements.
The updated legislation focuses on strengthening municipal governance, improving local service delivery, and promoting greater transparency and accountability in community administration.

The announcement ends several months of uncertainty over Punjab local elections, which faced repeated delays due to administrative, legal, and procedural complications.
Earlier, the Election Commission had reserved its decision after reviewing petitions and written submissions from multiple provincial stakeholders and legal representatives.
During previous hearings, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja expressed disappointment over criticism directed at the EC regarding the delayed elections.
He said that the repeated postponements had weakened public confidence in democratic stability and emphasized the importance of timely polls in Punjab and Islamabad.
Once the delimitation process concludes, Punjab political parties are expected to enter an active campaign phase for local government elections by early November.
The upcoming polls are anticipated to redefine local governance structures and further strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level throughout the province.
