Roohi Khan elected Chairperson SNGPL

Islamabad: Baboos finally managed on Monday to get their favorite candidate elected as chairman board of directors of Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL).

Advisor to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar had recommended the cabinet to approve the nomination of Rizwan-Ullah Khan as a possible candidate for chair of SNPGL. Cabinet approved it blocking the way of Roohi R Khan as chairperson of the gas utility.

However, the Baboos are too sharp. They fixed the problem and Rizwan-Ullah Khan had to resign on Monday night, few hours before the election to elect chairman board SNGPL.

This is still a mystery what happened. However, it is interesting that Roohi R Khan was elected on Monday as chairman SNGPL board and a candidate approved by the cabinet for possible chair of SNGPL became a history.

This is how bureaucracy works in Pakistan, one former board member SNGPL said adding that the first number of directors board was reduced to kick out private directors, and later, a candidate for possible chair of gas utility was shown the door.

However, Petroleum Division will have to give reason to the cabinet when it would seek possibly the ex-post facto approval for the nomination of Roohi Khan as chairperson of the SNGPL, officials said.

Another official said that no justification may be given and Petroleum Division would simply inform the cabinet that Mr. Rizwan-ullah Khan had resigned for personal reasons.

During the last few months, SNGPL has been musical chair where baboos were playing on appointment of Managing Director (MD) SNGPL. Now, they played well on the election of chairman board SNGPL.

Officials say that the SNGPL board would now be in complete control of baboos which was against the spirit of public listed companies which calls for an autonomous board of directors.

Earlier, Cabinet had turned down a nomination of Roohi R.Khan and approved the nomination of Rizwan-Ullah Khan for possible chair of the board of Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL).

Advisor to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar did not back Roohi Khan and rather recommended Rizwan-Ullah Khan for possible chair of SNGPL board.

Petroleum Division had proposed two names who include Roohi R Khan and Rizwan-Ullah khan for the possible chair of the board of directors of SNGPL. However, the cabinet turned down the nomination of Roohi R Khan to elect as chairman board of directors of SNGPL.

Roohi R Khan has been performing her duties as chairperson of the SNGPL board during her last tenure. The government holds 57.96 percent of shareholdings in SNGPL. The board had expired on June 20, 2020.
