SNGPL extends indefinite ban on new gas connections

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has announced an indefinite extension of its suspension on issuing new gas connections, further tightening the energy supply amid growing demand pressures.

Reasons behind the ban extension

Sources close to SNGPL revealed that the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran have disrupted the supply of Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), a crucial resource for Pakistan’s gas distribution system. This disruption has intensified the existing shortfall, especially as the arrival of winter has caused a significant increase in gas consumption nationwide.

Due to the scarcity of RLNG, gas supply interruptions have also triggered shortages in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), compounding the energy crisis. Furthermore, SNGPL has suspended the commercial gas provision to tandoors and hotels. Despite many consumers having already paid urgent processing charges, thousands remain unable to secure new gas connections.

Government’s role and future outlook

The ban was implemented under directives from the Ministry of Petroleum, with restoration of new gas connections contingent upon the easing of international tensions affecting supply chains. Presently, gas distribution is strictly regulated according to a predefined schedule aimed at managing the diminishing resources more efficiently.

Implications for Pakistani consumers

For the general populace, this development signals continued hardship in accessing new gas connections, limiting domestic energy options at a critical time of the year. The suspension also impacts commercial establishments reliant on gas, potentially affecting their operations and services. As the energy crisis deepens, it underscores the vulnerability of Pakistan’s energy infrastructure to international geopolitical dynamics and the pressing need for sustainable, diversified energy solutions.

A senior official at SNGPL stated, “The ban will remain until international supply routes stabilize, ensuring fair distribution amid scarcity.” This situation calls for close monitoring by policymakers to mitigate adverse effects on citizens and businesses alike.
