Severe smog grips Lahore and Punjab cities amid changing weather

As winter approaches, Lahore along with several other Punjab cities is experiencing hazardous air quality levels due to worsening smog conditions. The deteriorating air pollution, driven by climatic shifts and environmental factors, poses a serious threat to public health in the region.

Air quality index reveals alarming pollution levels

Recent air quality measurements across Punjab indicate that cities such as Multan and Gujranwala are suffering from critically unhealthy atmosphere. Multan recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 434, marking extremely dangerous levels for residents, while Gujranwala’s AQI stood at 347. Lahore also faces poor air with a reading of 294. Other areas including Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, and Sialkot have reported particulate matter concentrations exceeding 200 AQI, denoting unhealthy air quality.

Sources and impact of worsening smog

The smog problem is largely attributed to a combination of pollutants such as low-grade diesel emissions and smoke from seasonal crop burning, intensified by decreasing temperatures as winter sets in. These factors contribute to a dense fog infused with harmful particulates enveloping urban centers. Lahore’s pollution levels have on occasion reached over 80 times the safe limits recommended by the World Health Organization, highlighting the severe nature of this environmental challenge.

Efforts by local authorities to mitigate smog have thus far struggled to contain the problem, which repeatedly resurfaces during the colder months. Such poor air quality can aggravate respiratory diseases and other health complications for vulnerable populations, raising urgent concerns for public safety and welfare.

Why this matters for Pakistan

Punjab, being the most populous province of Pakistan, plays a crucial role in the country’s economic and social landscape. The recurring smog crisis not only threatens people’s health but also affects daily life, productivity, and healthcare resources. It also underscores the need for sustainable policies addressing pollution sources, better enforcement of environmental regulations, and community awareness to combat seasonal smog effectively. Elevated vigilance and proactive interventions are essential to safeguard citizens from the harmful impact of air pollution during winter months.
