Sonny Baker Poised for England Test Debut at Lord’s

England’s fast bowler Sonny Baker is on the verge of making his Test debut when England faces New Zealand in the opening match of the three-Test series at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday. The 23-year-old pacer is vying for a place in the team, which is set to play its first Test since their 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series in Australia.

Alongside Baker, Josh Tongue and the recalled Ollie Robinson are expected to fill two of the seam-bowling spots. Baker’s main competition for a place comes from Gus Atkinson, who boasts an impressive record at Lord’s, having taken 19 wickets at an average of just 10.94 in two previous Tests at the venue, and also scored a century against Sri Lanka.

Despite Atkinson’s accomplishments, Baker’s higher pace makes him an enticing option for the England selectors. Team management is also considering the weather forecast, which suggests that some overs might be lost due to rain, potentially making Baker’s extra pace a valuable asset in shorter spells.

England head coach Brendon McCullum expressed optimism about Baker’s abilities during a press conference at Lord’s. “He’s quick,” McCullum said. “I think he’s going to be a cricketer that the country really gets behind. You can see he charges in and leaves everything out there.” McCullum described Baker’s bowling as “full noise,” contrasting it with other bowlers who have a more rhythmic style.

McCullum highlighted Baker’s ability to reach speeds of up to 90 miles per hour (145 kilometres per hour) and noted his effective use of a skiddy bouncer. The coach emphasized that whether Baker plays in this Test or not, his time in the national setup is inevitable. McCullum noted that the team will weigh conditions such as heat and pitch behavior when deciding whether to include Baker for his extra pace or to favor bowlers known to extract movement at Lord’s.

Baker has previously played in two white-ball matches for England but has yet to take an international wicket. His performances in the shorter formats were expensive, but McCullum views those experiences as valuable learning opportunities that have contributed to his growth as a more complete cricketer.

In addition to the potential debut of Baker, opening batsman Emilio Gay is also expected to make his first Test appearance in the match against New Zealand. The Test will mark an important phase for England as they look to rebuild and find new talent to strengthen the squad following a challenging Ashes tour.
