South Africa batter Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the Pakistan Super League 2026 season after failing to recover from a thumb injury.

The 41-year-old was earlier sidelined midway through the SA20 2025–26 season after suffering a ligament tear in his right thumb during the ongoing season period.

Reports suggest du Plessis has not fully recovered and will require surgery, sidelining him from competitive cricket for the foreseeable future because of injury concerns.

His absence from PSL 2026 is considered a major blow, depriving the league and its supporters of one of its highest-profile overseas players overall there.

Du Plessis had opted out of the IPL 2026 auction after release by Delhi Capitals, choosing instead to commit to the PSL season earlier announced.

The former South Africa captain last played in the PSL during the 2021 season, appearing for Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi across limited appearances overall.

In five innings, du Plessis scored 107 runs at an average of 21.40, with a strike rate of 122.98 during his Pakistan Super League stint.
