SSGC cracks down on gas theft, removes 950 illegal connections
Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has intensified its anti-gas theft operations across Sindh and Balochistan, disconnecting around 950 illegal connections in Karachi and surrounding regions as part of an ongoing crackdown against unauthorized gas use.
In coordinated raids led by the Security, Surveillance and Counter Gas Theft Operations (SS&CGTO) department, along with the CRD Theft Section, Distribution Department, SSGC Police, and local law enforcement, multiple gas theft networks were dismantled in Soomar Goth, Shah Latif Town, Benazirabad, and Yar Mohammad Goth. Officials said the raids were part of SSGC’s broader campaign to curb gas losses and safeguard the integrity of its distribution network.

During one operation near Soomar Goth, National Highway, Steel Town, inspectors uncovered a direct underground connection from an 8-inch SSGC distribution line that was illegally supplying gas to around 200 houses. The organizers were reportedly charging residents Rs20,000 in advance and Rs2,000 per month. FIRs were registered against Allah Wadaya Abbasi and Rafiq Buledi, identified as the main perpetrators.
In another major raid in Shah Latif Town (Sector 30/C) and Benazirabad, the team found a 6-inch line tapped directly into the company’s main supply, serving roughly 400 houses. The accused, including Allah Wadaya Abbasi and Shafiq Arain, were allegedly collecting Rs20,000 advance and Rs3,000 monthly fees from illegal consumers. FIRs were lodged at the Steel Town Police Station.
A third operation in Yar Mohammad Goth, Malir, revealed that suspects Muhammad Younus Khan and Muhammad Rafiq had punctured a 20-inch high-pressure main to supply gas to approximately 300 houses, charging Rs10,000 upfront and Rs2,000 per month. Authorities immediately sealed the illegal connection and filed cases against those involved.
An SSGC spokesperson said the company would maintain zero tolerance toward gas theft, emphasizing that such acts not only cause heavy financial losses but also endanger lives and exacerbate the country’s gas shortfall. The company reaffirmed its commitment to continue aggressive crackdowns in theft-prone localities, warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone misusing this precious and fast-depleting resource.
According to SSGC, unaccounted-for gas (UFG) losses — including theft and leakage — account for over 15% of total system losses, costing billions of rupees annually. The utility has stepped up enforcement efforts in line with directives from the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) to protect public infrastructure and ensure equitable energy distribution.
