SSGC disconnects illegal Connections in Balochistan

Company intensifies crackdown on gas theft as resource depletion accelerates.

The Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd. (SSGC) has removed 662 illegal gas connections across Balochistan as part of its ongoing campaign against gas theft in its franchise areas of Sindh and Balochistan, the utility said in a statement.

According to SSGC, the Security Services and Counter Gas Theft Operations team, working in coordination with the Customer Relations and Recovery departments, carried out targeted raids in theft-prone localities.

The illegal connections were found through underground and overhead clamps installed at multiple points along the main distribution lines. All tampering equipment was dismantled on-site, and claims will be raised to recover the value of stolen gas.

Gas theft remains a major contributor to Pakistan’s unaccounted-for gas (UFG) losses, which stood at around 16% for SSGC in FY2024, according to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The regulator has repeatedly urged gas utilities to curb pilferage to reduce financial strain on the energy sector, where circular debt in gas and power combined has surpassed Rs 5.5 trillion as of mid-2025.

SSGC emphasized that natural gas reserves are depleting at nearly 10% per annum, underscoring the urgency of conservation and theft prevention measures. Pakistan’s domestic gas output has fallen to about 2.9 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), against total demand exceeding 4.5 bcfd, forcing the country to rely heavily on imported LNG to bridge the gap.

The company urged consumers to report incidents of gas theft through its official helpline (1199), mobile application “SSGC Customer Connect,” or via social media and customer facilitation centers.

SSGC said the intensified operations in Balochistan reflect its commitment to protect limited national energy resources and ensure fair supply to paying consumers, as Pakistan’s gas sector faces mounting pressure from declining reserves and rising system losses.
