Tarbela 5th Extension HPP Advances Towards Carbon Market Registration

The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5) has achieved a significant milestone in WAPDA’s engagement with international carbon markets. The Project is expected to reduce approximately 565,905 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, contributing to a total reduction of 5,659,053 tons over a fixed 10-year crediting period.

The verification process for the Project has commenced and, upon completion, the Project will be registered with the Global Carbon Council (GCC). This will make T5 Pakistan’s first hydropower project to achieve GCC registration. The progress has been made possible with technical support from the World Bank and through the successful completion of key milestones, including project submission and the engagement of GCC-approved international verifier namely LGAI Technologies, Spain.

As part of the verification process, a site visit was conducted by the local auditor of LGAI Technologies.

During the visit, GM/PD T5, Umair Manan, briefed the auditor on the overall progress of the Project. Director (Civil) T5, Faisal Hayat, and Assistant Director Environment T5, Asima Mughal, also informed the auditor about ongoing construction activities, in addition to environmental and social management aspects of the Project.

The auditor appreciated the progress achieved across various components of the Project and expressed satisfaction with compliance to environmental and social plans.

The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, on completion, will play a vital role in promoting clean energy and supporting Pakistan’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
