Threads Adds Auto-Split Text and Animated Stickers

Meta has introduced two new features to its social media platform Threads, aimed at enhancing user engagement and simplifying content creation. The updates, announced on May 7, 2026, include an automatic text-splitting function for longer posts and the addition of animated stickers that bring posts to life in users’ feeds.
The new auto-split feature automatically separates text passages exceeding 500 characters into multiple linked posts when users paste content into Threads’ mobile composer. This eliminates the need for manual editing or concern about character limits, allowing longer content to be displayed directly in the feed rather than as attachments. The feature is now available to all users globally.
Alongside this, Meta has introduced animated stickers, currently being tested in select regions. These stickers can be added by tapping the blank space in the post composer and selecting “Add sticker” from the popup menu. Unlike traditional GIFs that are attached separately, these animated stickers and text elements appear inline within the post text, providing visual motion without attaching full media files. The animation styles include moving and pulsing visuals that enhance the post’s appearance.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi first spotted these animated stickers during early testing in January 2026, with Meta confirming their limited rollout this week. The company described the feature as experimental, with industry experts cautioning that widespread use could potentially overwhelm users with excessive animations.
These updates are part of Meta’s broader strategy to increase user interaction on Threads, which has been rapidly growing since its launch in July 2023. The platform now boasts over 275 million monthly active users as of March 2026 and competes with platforms like X and Bluesky in the microblogging and text-based social networking space.
Recent innovations on Threads include playable music stickers introduced in early May, emoji reactions targeted at specific words tested in April, and even basketball mini-games that debuted during the NBA All-Star Weekend in February. Meta continues to focus on creator-friendly features and engagement mechanisms to strengthen Threads’ user base and content diversity.
While the automatic text splitting is fully available worldwide, the animated sticker feature remains under regional testing. Meta’s ongoing commitment to refining the user experience on Threads suggests that further enhancements may be forthcoming as the platform evolves.
