Ukraine Drone Strikes Target St. Petersburg Amid Economic Forum
Ukrainian drones struck energy and military targets in Saint Petersburg early Wednesday, coinciding with the opening of the city’s annual International Economic Forum, according to statements from both Russian and Ukrainian officials.
The forum, which attracts around 20,000 participants from 130 countries, is a significant event for Russia seeking international business engagement. This year’s three-day gathering, once a key platform for courting Western investors, began amidst heightened tensions due to the drone attacks.
Authorities reported damage to several infrastructure sites, including the Saint Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Kronstadt military base. However, Saint Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed that no casualties occurred during the assault.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attacks as part of Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions,” a series of retaliatory strikes aimed at pressuring Russia to end the ongoing conflict. He shared footage showing the oil depot engulfed in flames, emphasizing that these actions are intended to bring peace closer.
The strikes had immediate operational impacts, including the temporary closure of Saint Petersburg’s main airport overnight. Ukrainian officials indicated that the timing of the attacks was intended to disrupt the forum, where Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on Friday.
Sergiy Sternenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Defence Minister, noted the symbolic nature of the event’s opening, highlighting how delegates proceeded to the venue with visible plumes of black smoke in the background due to the drone strikes.
The drone assault followed a previous day marked by Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of 23 people. The ongoing military exchanges underscore the persistence of hostilities amid diplomatic and economic engagements.
