US Approves $686m F-16 Upgrade for Pakistan

Pakistan has welcomed US approval of a $686 million package to upgrade its F-16 fighter jets, extending their operational life until 2040.
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the announcement in a letter to Congress on 8 December 2025.
The upgrade package provides Link-16 systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics upgrades, training, simulators, spare parts, and full logistical support.
These improvements will modernize Pakistan’s Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade F-16 aircraft, ensuring they remain operational and effective.
The DSCA said the sale supports US security objectives, helping Pakistan maintain interoperability with the US and allied forces.
A Foreign Office spokesperson welcomed the decision, saying the package will strengthen defense, improve fleet security, and ensure safe aircraft operation.

The $686 million package includes $37 million for major defense equipment, such as 92 Link-16 systems and six unexploded Mk-82 bomb bodies.
The remaining $649 million covers other equipment, software and hardware upgrades, training, simulators, and full technical support.
Lockheed Martin will serve as the prime contractor, and no additional US personnel will be deployed in Pakistan.
Pakistan first applied for the F-16 upgrade in 2021, though the process was delayed.
Although Pakistan relies more on other fighter platforms, the upgrade ensures readiness and extends the F-16 fleet’s operational life.
