WhatsApp to Add Username-Based Calling Feature

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will let users make voice and video calls using usernames instead of phone numbers to ensure greater privacy.

According to initial reports, users will be able to search for a username in the Calls tab and start conversations without sharing personal contact numbers.

The search results will display the profile and limited details based on the privacy preferences of an individual, ensuring controlled visibility for both parties involved.

However, the feature will operate only under specific conditions defined by WhatsApp to maintain user security and prevent unwanted or random contact attempts.

Users can call a username only if they already have an existing chat history or if the security feature of recipient called “username key” is disabled.

This username key adds an additional verification layer, requiring a one-time security passcode before allowing calls from unknown or first-time contacts.

WhatsApp stated that all username-based calls will be safeguarded through end-to-end encryption, maintaining the same protection as standard WhatsApp communications.

The feature remains under testing and is expected to debut first for iOS users in a future update before expanding to Android and other platforms.
