Younis Khan Set to Replace Sarfaraz as Pakistan Test Coach

Former Pakistan Test captain Younis Khan is reportedly poised to take over as the national Test head coach, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed after a series of disappointing results, according to multiple sources.
Sarfaraz was appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s Test team in April 2026 but faced an immediate challenge during an away two-match Test series against Bangladesh, part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. Pakistan suffered a 2-0 whitewash in the series, marking their second straight Test series loss to Bangladesh, which raised concerns about the team’s performance in red-ball cricket.
The defeats have prompted calls for restructuring within the team’s coaching and leadership framework. Reports indicate that several roles, including that of the Test captaincy held by Shan Masood, may also be reviewed as part of the broader changes being considered by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Younis Khan, celebrated as one of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen and a former captain, is the frontrunner for the head coach position. In addition to coaching responsibilities, Khan is expected to join the national selection committee, which would enable him to influence team selections and strategy comprehensively.
Despite the anticipated coaching change, Sarfaraz Ahmed is expected to remain involved with the Pakistan Shaheens, the country’s development squad, continuing to contribute to the national setup in a different capacity.
The PCB has not officially announced any changes, but sources confirm that discussions are underway regarding the restructuring of the coaching staff and selection panels to improve Pakistan’s Test performance going forward.
The move underscores Pakistan cricket’s urgency to stabilize and strengthen its Test team, aiming to reverse the recent poor run and improve competitiveness on the international stage.
