Event set for Islamabad as part of PM’s Youth Programme revival

ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) will formally launch the new phase of the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme on Thursday.

The launching ceremony will be held at the Jinnah Convention Center, Islamabad. The event will be held under the chairmanship of Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Chairman of PMYP.

The initiative is aimed at distributing laptops among outstanding students across public sector universities and technical institutions. The objective is to enhance digital literacy and promote innovation among youth. The scheme is part of the government’s broader effort to equip young people with tools for academic and entrepreneurial advancement in the digital economy.

Under the previous phases of the programme, the government has distributed more than 500,000 laptops nationwide between 2013 and 2023, according to official PMYP data. The new round, announced in the FY26 development budget, is going to expands eligibility to include postgraduate students and vocational learners in technology disciplines.

The government has emphasized the scheme’s role in bridging the digital divide and supporting the Pakistan Vision 2025 agenda for inclusive growth through technology-driven education.

According to the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan currently has over 3.4 million enrolled university students, with digital access identified as a key enabler for quality learning outcomes.

Officials said the launching ceremony will also feature a digital showcase of youth-led innovation projects supported by PMYP and partner institutions. The event marks another step in the government’s youth empowerment drive, alongside ongoing initiatives in skills development, entrepreneurship, and green jobs.
