Before the election, former U.S. President Donald Trump had urged voters not to back Mamdani. He called for throwing his support behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo — one of Mamdani’s longtime critics — who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary.

A day before the polls opened, Trump wrote on social media: “Whether you like Andrew Cuomo personally or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a great job. He has what Mamdani doesn’t!”

Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York’s state politics, downplayed Trump’s endorsement, saying, “He’s not supporting me — he’s opposing Mamdani.”
