514 Suspected Fake Degrees Under Scrutiny at Gomal University

Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is currently under investigation following allegations of 514 suspected fake degrees and financial irregularities. The scandal has prompted formal action from the university’s administration and provincial authorities.
The Vice Chancellor of Gomal University, responding to directives from the provincial government, has taken official notice of the irregularities which reportedly span multiple years. As part of the preliminary response, Additional Controller Muhammad Waseem and IT Director Riaz Ahmad have been suspended pending further investigation. Additional disciplinary measures are anticipated as the probe continues.
A high-level inquiry has been launched to examine alleged financial misappropriations and the broader irregularities thought to have occurred between 2019 and 2023. The investigation focuses on hundreds of questionable degrees listed in official records, with recommendations made for the cancellation of these fraudulent credentials in order to preserve the institution’s academic integrity.
To manage the inquiry, a new committee has been established to conduct an independent and thorough review of the scandal’s scope. This committee is tasked with uncovering the full extent of the malpractice and ensuring accountability for those involved.
Higher Education Minister Meena Khan Afridi has emphasized the need for robust oversight across all public universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. She has pledged strict enforcement of accountability measures against anyone implicated in the scandal without exception. Minister Afridi further committed to purging corruption and dismantling networks responsible for producing fake degrees within the province’s higher education sector.
The case at Gomal University raises broader concerns about the integrity of degree verification processes and financial governance within educational institutions in Pakistan. It also highlights ongoing efforts by provincial authorities to enhance transparency and maintain quality standards in higher education.
