Flour Hike Forces Bakers to Halt Operations in Protest

Bakers in Rawalpindi have announced a tandoor shutter-down strike on October 28 in protest against the steep rise in flour prices affecting daily operations.

Flour costs have surged sharply, with an 80-kg sack of fine flour now crossing Rs 11,700, while red flour prices have jumped above Rs 10,500, squeezing bakers’ margins.

Following the price hike, the cost of naan has increased from Rs 30 to Rs 35, and oily naan is now being sold at Rs 60 instead of Rs 50.

The Nanbai Association stated that bakers are struggling to sell affordable bread while paying high rates for flour, with no effective measures against the so-called flour mafia.

Association representatives also highlighted that authorities are imposing heavy fines and making arrests, further aggravating the situation for small bakery owners across the city.

The strike on October 28 aims to pressure authorities to regulate flour prices and provide relief to both bakers and consumers struggling with rising food costs.
