Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir Arrive in Switzerland for US-Iran Talks
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, accompanied by a high-level Pakistani delegation, have arrived in Switzerland to participate in significant talks involving the United States and Iran. The discussions, scheduled to take place at the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock, aim to advance the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Islamabad MoU was previously agreed upon as part of efforts to ease tensions between the US and Iran through diplomatic measures facilitated by Pakistan. The ongoing dialogue marks the first formal high-level meeting since the memorandum was signed, signifying an important step in the peace process.
Senior delegates from Iran, Qatar, the United States, and Pakistan are expected to participate, reviewing progress and reaffirming commitments outlined in the MoU. Pakistan’s Foreign Office highlighted that the talks will serve to solidify Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue and peace in the region.
In addition to the multilateral discussions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is anticipated to engage in bilateral meetings with representatives from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the United States. These interactions underline Pakistan’s balanced and constructive approach throughout the crisis, according to officials.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted the country’s instrumental role in hosting the initial negotiation rounds between the United States and Iran. It emphasised that Pakistan’s continuous diplomatic efforts helped in paving the way for the Islamabad MoU, which serves as a framework for de-escalation and future cooperation.
This diplomatic engagement comes amid ongoing international efforts to stabilize relations in the region, with Pakistan positioning itself as a key facilitator.
