Two Arrested in Hyderabad Over Pelican Smuggling Attempt

Hyderabad’s Wildlife Department successfully intercepted an illegal attempt to smuggle pelicans, resulting in the arrest of two individuals, including the driver of a mini truck involved in the operation.

Deputy Conservator Wildlife Mumtaz Soomro confirmed that 16 pelicans were recovered during a vehicle search prompted by a secret tip-off. The birds were being transported from Dadu to Karachi with the intent to sell them at a high price.

Authorities noted that there is a prevalent misconception among some people that pelican oil can provide relief for knee and joint ailments, which is contributing to the demand for these protected water birds.

A case has been filed against the arrested individuals under the Sindh Wildlife Protection Act as the investigation into the smuggling attempt continues.

The wildlife department remains vigilant against such illegal activities to safeguard Pakistan’s biodiversity and prevent the exploitation of protected species.
