Pakistan to Generate Electricity from Solid Waste

The government of Pakistan is moving forward with plans to generate electricity from solid waste, aiming to address environmental challenges while augmenting the country’s energy resources. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad focused on developing a modern and sustainable solid waste management system aligned with energy production goals.
During the meeting, directives were issued to federal and provincial authorities to collaborate in introducing an advanced, technology-driven waste management framework across Pakistan. A central component of the initiative involves creating a comprehensive roadmap to harness electricity from solid waste, marking a significant step toward the country’s alternative and renewable energy ambitions.
Officials highlighted that this strategy is designed to reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuels, thereby conserving foreign exchange reserves. It also targets lowering environmental pollution by converting waste into productive energy, which will contribute to easing the country’s growing electricity demand.
To ensure effective implementation, the prime minister ordered the formation of a dedicated task force composed of local and international experts specializing in waste-to-energy technologies. This group will develop detailed recommendations reflecting current global best practices and technological advancements in the sector.
The project is expected to improve municipal waste disposal systems significantly, turning solid waste from an environmental liability into a valuable energy resource. By doing so, the government anticipates strengthening energy security and advancing environmental sustainability objectives, notably through carbon emission reductions and enhanced urban waste management.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that this initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of promoting cleaner energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint, underscoring the government’s commitment to transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions.
Overall, the move to generate electricity from solid waste reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix, addressing environmental concerns while supporting economic stability and energy independence.
