HBO Pauses ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Filming in Vancouver

HBO has unexpectedly halted production on the third season of its acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama series, The Last of Us. Filming, which began in Vancouver on March 2, 2026, under the working title Calm Current, was officially suspended from June 1 through June 28, according to British Columbia production schedules.

The network has not issued an official explanation for the sudden pause, but industry insiders suggest the timing coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada is partially hosting. The major sporting event, running from June 11 to July 19, could impact production logistics and resource availability in cities like Vancouver where several matches are scheduled.

The Last of Us, adapted from the popular Naughty Dog video game franchise, debuted on HBO in 2023 to critical and audience acclaim. Despite mixed reactions to the second season, the series maintained strong viewership metrics, securing a renewal for season three.

Filming is still projected to resume after the World Cup break, with a tentative wrap date set for November 27, 2026. HBO aims to release the new season sometime in 2027, signaling continued confidence in the show’s future.

While the temporary suspension has caught fans by surprise, the production team is expected to navigate the scheduling challenges brought on by the global event and return to set shortly.
