Portugal Beat Croatia to Reach World Cup Last 16

Portugal secured their place in the last 16 of the World Cup after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in a thrilling encounter in Toronto on Thursday.
The match was decided in stoppage time when substitute Goncalo Ramos scored a decisive headed goal, connecting with a precise cross from Rafael Leao to silence a Croatian side that had dominated much of the game.
Croatia appeared to have salvaged a late equalizer through Josko Gvardiol, but the goal was disallowed for offside, leaving the Croatians stunned and Portugal celebrating their narrow win.
Cristiano Ronaldo played a pivotal role by converting a penalty that brought Portugal level after Croatia’s Ivan Perisic had opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with a low finish beneath Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
This penalty goal marked Ronaldo’s first in the knockout phase of the World Cup, adding another significant milestone to his illustrious international career. Portugal now prepare to face Spain in the next round in Dallas on Monday.
After Perisic’s opener, Ronaldo’s potential equalizer was disallowed for offside, but Portugal were soon awarded a penalty when Renato Veiga was fouled inside the box by Croatia’s Nikola Vlasic. Ronaldo calmly converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The game maintained its intensity throughout, with Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic hitting a low shot that was tipped onto the post by Costa. Croatia continued to press and came close to scoring again when Mario Pasalic’s header narrowly missed the target.
Ronaldo was substituted in the 81st minute, making way for Ruben Neves, but Portugal held firm under constant Croatian pressure until Ramos’ late heroics ensured their progression.
The victory sets up an exciting last-16 clash between Portugal and Spain, highlighting Ronaldo’s ongoing impact and Portugal’s resilience in a tightly contested World Cup match.
