Govt Maintains Diesel, Petrol Prices

Amid public criticism, the government on Saturday maintained the existing oil prices effective for two days-July 26-27 after continuous increase in prices during a week.

The government has been under fire over continous increase in oil prices under weekly oil prices review.

The government had also faced criticism over claims of collecting Rs 1.7 trillion from the oil consumers on account of petroleum levy (PL).

The consumers had faced a massive hike in the price of high speed diesel by Rs 31 per litre and Rs 5.44 per litre increase in petrol price on July 17 when the government started following daily oil prices review.

The price of petrol stood at Rs 310.71 per litre and diesel Rs 323.30 per litre on July 17 that had jumped up to Rs 335.18 and Rs 383.46 per litre respectively in a week. The price of petrol had gone up to Rs 24.47 per litre and diesel Rs 60.16 per litre in a week.

After making continuous hikes, the government on Saturday decided to maintain the existing price of petrol at Rs 335.18 per litre and diesel Rs 383.46 per litre.

International benchmark Brent crude was being traded at around US$96.78 per barrel on July 25, 2026, whereas U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) price stood at US$89.31 per barrel after retreating from above US$100 amid easing geopolitical concerns. 

 The government on Friday had increased the prices of high speed diesel by Rs 7.83 per litre and Rs 6.39 per litre petrol. The price of petrol has been hiked by Rs 3.66 per litre.    

The consumers have been using High speed diesel widely in the transport and agriculture sectors. 

The consumers use petrol in motorbikes and cars. 

The government has been charging petroleum levy (PL) at a rate of  Rs. 70.82/liter PL (retail) and Rs. 79.46/liter (direct sale).Additonally, the consuemrs are paying Rs. 5.00 CSL on high speed diesel. The government has been charging Rs. 80.00 per petroleum levy and Rs. 5.00 CSL per litre on petrol for retail outlets.

The consumers are also paying Rs 105 per litre petroleum levy on HOBC (97 RON) & MS (95 RON). They are also paying petroleum levy on superior Kerosene Oil and Light Diesel vy of Rs 20.36 and Rs. 15.84 respectively. The government is also charging a petroleum Rs. 77.00/liter (Rs. 82,077/MT) on furnace oil for both retail and direct sale plus Rs. 5.00/liter (Rs. 5,330/MT) CSL.
