SHC raises concern over delay in JIT for missing person case

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has expressed serious apprehensions regarding the postponement in constituting a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for tracing a missing individual, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

Judicial concern over investigation delays

On Saturday, during proceedings related to a case of a person reported missing under the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police jurisdiction, the SHC underscored the sensitive nature of such cases. The constitutional bench highlighted that delays exacerbate the psychological and emotional distress endured by the families of missing persons, urging authorities to take swift, coordinated action.

The investigation officer (IO) presented a report on the efforts to form the JIT but noted that despite requests, no response had been received from the relevant competent authorities. The IO’s letters requesting the establishment of the JIT remain unanswered, reflecting a lack of prompt administrative action.

Orders for immediate formation of JIT

Prompted by the IO’s update, the SHC ordered immediate steps for the creation of the JIT without any further delays. The bench also directed the designated focal person in the Sindh home department to ensure speedy implementation of the court’s instructions.

The court has adjourned the case’s next hearing until November 26, effectively setting a timeline for progress on this matter.

Why this matters for Pakistan

Missing persons cases are a deeply troubling issue in Pakistan, often linked to larger concerns about law enforcement efficacy and human rights protections. Delays in investigations not only hamper justice but also inflict prolonged suffering on affected families. The SHC’s firm stance on expediting the formation of JITs reflects an attempt to ensure accountability and responsiveness in such sensitive matters.

As families continue to wait anxiously for answers, timely investigations can play a pivotal role in restoring public trust and safeguarding citizens’ rights in Pakistan.

An SHC official commented, “The disappearance of a dear-one causes extreme mental and psychological distress for the family,” underscoring the human toll involved in these delays.
