Punjab Cracks Down on Unauthorized Use of Official Flags on Vehicles
The Punjab government has launched a stringent campaign targeting the unauthorized use of official flags on vehicles and the misuse of permanent police escorts. This move aims to enforce compliance with new protocol guidelines across the province.
Restriction on Flags and Escorts
A notification from the Chief Minister’s Office explicitly prohibits individuals from displaying government flags or flagstaffs on vehicles without proper legal entitlement. This directive is part of broader efforts to clamp down on misuse of official symbols and privileges on public roads.
Additionally, the government has banned permanent police escorts for a broad range of officials, including provincial cabinet members, advisers, special assistants, parliamentary secretaries, standing committee chairpersons, members of the provincial assembly (MPAs), government officers, and private citizens without valid authorization. Authorities have been instructed to immediately withdraw any unauthorized police escorts operating under previous arrangements.
Implementation and Oversight
The Inspector General of Police in Punjab has been tasked with reviewing existing police escort deployments to ensure immediate compliance with the new orders. The stricter guidelines intend to remove misuses of protocol privileges and reinforce the legal framework governing the use of official insignia and law enforcement resources.
Significance for Pakistan
In Pakistan, the unauthorized use of official flags and unwarranted police protection have long been issues linked to abuse of power and corruption. The Punjab government’s initiative reflects a broader nationwide effort to restore propriety and legality in public administration. It aims to create a more transparent environment where protocol privileges are reserved strictly for legitimate uses, ultimately enhancing public trust.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Chief Minister of Punjab, emphasized the importance of enforcing these protocols to safeguard the sanctity of official symbols and state resources. The timely crackdown also serves as a reminder that misuse of government authority will face administrative action.
