Punjab Endorses Rs32.8bn Road and Auto Tech Projects

The Punjab government has sanctioned major infrastructure initiatives, including two pivotal road development projects valued at Rs32.8 billion and a specialized automotive technology centre in Lahore. These approvals aim to enhance transportation efficiency and provide advanced technical training in automotive technologies.

Key Road Development Initiatives

The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) gave the green light to revised plans for the rehabilitation of the Gujrat-Sargodha Road located in the Mandi Bahauddin district. This road, critical for passenger and commercial traffic moving among Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Sargodha, will see improvements costing almost Rs12 billion.

In addition, the PDWP approved the dualization of the road stretching from Lilla Interchange on the M-2 Motorway to Pind Dadan Khan, with an estimated budget of roughly Rs20.8 billion. This project has been submitted for inclusion in the Public Sector Development Program. Together, these projects seek to upgrade vital transport corridors within Punjab.

New Automotive Technology Centre in Lahore

Alongside the road projects, the government sanctioned Rs762 million for a Centre of Excellence in Advanced Automotive Technologies situated in Shahdara, Lahore. This centre will serve as a hub for expert training and help raise skilled technicians proficient in emerging vehicle technologies like electric and hybrid vehicles, aligning with Pakistan’s gradual transition toward modern automotive systems.

This investment is poised to support workforce development in the automotive sector, equipping professionals to meet the demands of increasingly sophisticated transport technology.

Implications for Pakistan

These infrastructure projects in Punjab not only promise to improve logistics and connectivity between key urban and rural areas but also foster industrial advancement through specialized education. For Pakistan, where transportation infrastructure and technical expertise are poles of economic growth, these developments are significant steps.

Expert Ayesha Ali remarked, “The new automotive centre will significantly support the evolving needs of Pakistan’s vehicle industry by equipping a skilled workforce ready for future challenges.” As these projects move from approval to execution, close attention will be paid to their implementation timelines and how they influence regional mobility and industry readiness.
