NCCIA Busts Karachi Call Centre Involved in Global Fraud
The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) conducted a significant operation in Karachi, apprehending 273 individuals linked to an international financial fraud scheme. The raid targeted a call centre allegedly engaged in deceptive activities aimed at foreign victims.
Details of the NCCIA Operation in Karachi
The crackdown took place on November 4 at a facility near Kavish Crown Plaza on Shahra-e-Faisal. Authorities confiscated a large cache of equipment including 339 laptops, 152 mobile phones, and four computers. The centre, operating under the name Voxtron Solutions, reportedly specialized in impersonation and identity spoofing tactics to target overseas nationals.
According to Additional Director Shahzad Akbar, staff members impersonated officials from international banks and debt validation firms, contacting individuals abroad under the pretense of confirming outstanding debts. These fraudulent calls were designed to collect sensitive personal data such as Social Security numbers and payment card information.
Impacts and Investigation Status
The gathered information was used to facilitate unauthorized financial transactions through merchant accounts. Initial investigations suggest that illicit funds were transferred back into Pakistan, indicating a possible cross-border money laundering operation. All seized digital devices are currently undergoing forensic analysis to support ongoing case proceedings.
The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, covering unauthorized access, electronic forgery, fraud, identity misuse, and caller ID spoofing.
Community Reaction and Broader Significance
Following the arrests, families of those detained, including about 100 women, protested near Baloch Colony Bridge demanding the release of their relatives, insisting on their innocence. The protest temporarily disrupted traffic on Shahra-e-Faisal but was later cleared after negotiations with law enforcement.
This operation highlights the growing threat of cyber fraud in Pakistan and the government’s commitment to combating financial crimes that impact international stakeholders. For Pakistani citizens, such law enforcement actions reinforce the importance of vigilance against scams and the consequences of involvement in illicit call centres.
Similar enforcement actions earlier this month included the arrest of over 40 individuals in another Karachi call centre implicated in financial scams targeting foreign victims.
