Pakistan Railways Stops Air Travel for Officials to Cut Costs

In a significant move to reduce expenses, Pakistan Railways has prohibited air travel for all government officials on official duty, mandating the use of train services instead. This decision, announced as part of broader austerity measures, also restricts the use of government vehicles for official trips.

New Restrictions on Official Travel

The rail authority’s latest directive makes it clear that officials will no longer receive reimbursements for air travel expenses. Instead, they are required to rely exclusively on trains for their official journeys. Furthermore, the policy bars officials from utilizing government cars, aiming to maximize savings and promote the rail network.

Emergency Safety Protocols Enforced Until 2026

Alongside travel limitations, Pakistan Railways has launched an emergency operational plan to enhance train safety across the board. This initiative, overseen by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, includes the cancellation of leave for all field officers for a three-month period and mandates their involvement in supervising train operations even on Sundays. The emergency status will remain active until December 31, 2026.

Key officials such as the Civil and Mechanical Chief Engineers and the Head of Safety are required to submit daily performance and safety reports to the ministry to ensure continuous monitoring and improvement.

Context and Impact for Pakistan

This policy shift arrives against the backdrop of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to streamline public sector expenses while striving to improve the safety and efficiency of rail travel. Encouraging officials to use railways instead of air travel might boost passenger numbers and revenue for Pakistan Railways, which has faced financial and operational challenges for years.

For Pakistani citizens, these steps signal a government focus on strengthening domestic infrastructure and cost-effectiveness. The emphasis on safety and constant oversight may lead to improved service quality for train passengers nationwide.

Minister Abbasi emphasized the administration’s commitment to passenger safety, stating, “Our government prioritizes secure and reliable train journeys for all citizens.”
