PIA Staff Accused of Misusing Premium Seat Fees at Lahore Airport
Over twenty employees of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) working at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore have been accused of diverting funds collected from passengers for premium seating options, according to an internal audit report.
Details of the Alleged Fraud at Lahore Airport
The audit revealed that staff charged passengers for upgrades such as extra-legroom, premium, and bulkhead seats on both domestic and international flights, frequently after the flights had already departed. Instead of depositing these fees into the airline’s accounts, the ground personnel manipulated system records to reclassify these seats as standard and kept the money for themselves. Notably, three women are included in the group of implicated employees.
The irregularities came to light during a thorough examination of records from May 2024 and May 2025 by PIA’s Lahore Finance and Audit Committee. Station Manager Ashfaq Hussain Awan was instructed to initiate formal proceedings in response.
Actions Taken and Ongoing Issues
PIA has recovered PKR 5,060,269 from the staff involved through deductions from their salaries, depositing the amount back into the airline’s funds. Despite the findings, all accused remain employed with the airline. While PIA’s internal rules call for departmental disciplinary measures, senior officials reportedly intervened, halting further administrative action against the guilty personnel.
Additionally, a separate security breach was reported when the Airports Security Force (ASF) revoked the airport access pass of another PIA employee on May 9, 2026. This individual allegedly provided unauthorized protocol assistance to a passenger, allowing priority processing at the immigration counter, violating government regulations on airport entry pass usage.
Commenting on the situation, Station Manager Awan stated, “The amount has been recovered from the concerned individuals and deposited into PIA’s account,” while noting that one implicated employee has since retired and no further official action has been communicated to him.
Significance for Pakistani Air Travellers
This case highlights growing concerns about corruption affecting service delivery within Pakistan’s flag carrier. For passengers, such malpractice undermines trust in transparent pricing for seat upgrades and may affect perceptions of PIA’s operational integrity. Addressing these internal control weaknesses is crucial for restoring customer confidence and improving overall airline governance.
PIA’s delayed or limited disciplinary responses also raise questions about accountability, which remains a critical challenge for Pakistan’s public sector enterprises aiming to enhance efficiency and transparency.
